How to Use Free SEO Tools as an Indie Founder

Paid SEO tools are overkill for most indie founders. The free tier of the right tools gives you everything you need to rank — here is the stack.

The default SEO advice assumes you have a $100/month budget for tools. Ahrefs starts at $129/month. Semrush is even more. For a bootstrapped founder pre-revenue, that is a meaningful chunk of your runway.

The good news: you can do real, effective SEO with entirely free tools. Not toy tools — the same infrastructure that powers expensive platforms, just with usage limits that are fine for an early-stage product.

Google Search Console — your most important free tool

Search Console is the single most valuable SEO tool for any stage of product, and it is completely free. It tells you exactly what search queries are bringing people to your site, which pages are indexed, which have errors, and how your rankings have changed over time.

Set it up the day you launch — not three months later. You need baseline data. The keyword data in Search Console is real Google data, not sampled estimates. No paid tool gives you more accurate click and impression counts for your own domain.

Specifically, watch the "Search results" report. Sort by impressions. Any keyword where you get hundreds of impressions but a low click-through rate is a title or meta description you should rewrite — you are ranking but not compelling enough to click.

Google's free Keyword Planner

Keyword Planner is inside Google Ads and free with any Google account. You do not need to run ads to use the keyword research features. Enter a seed term related to your product and it returns search volume data, related terms, and seasonal trends.

The volumes are shown as ranges (1K–10K rather than exact numbers) unless you have an active ad campaign, but for indie SEO purposes the range is enough. You are looking for low-competition keywords with enough volume to matter — the exact number is less important than finding the long-tail terms your competitors are ignoring.

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free tier)

Ahrefs offers a free Webmaster Tools tier that gives you backlink data, organic keyword rankings, and technical SEO issues for your own domain. It is limited compared to the paid plan, but for a single indie product you are usually only tracking one domain anyway.

The backlink report is the standout feature. You can see exactly which directories and sites are linking to you, what anchor text they use, and whether the links are dofollow or nofollow. Use this to confirm that your directory submissions are being indexed and passing link equity.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider (free up to 500 URLs)

Screaming Frog crawls your site like a search engine and surfaces technical issues: broken links, duplicate title tags, missing meta descriptions, redirect chains, pages blocked by robots.txt. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs, which covers most early-stage indie products entirely.

Run it once a month. The issues it finds — a missing canonical tag, a broken image URL, a page returning a 302 instead of a 301 — are exactly the kind of thing that depresses rankings invisibly. You will not notice until you fix them and your rankings improve.

Answer the Public (free searches per day)

Answer the Public visualises the questions people ask about a topic in a format that is genuinely useful for content ideation. Enter your product category and you get a map of "who, what, when, where, how, why" questions that real people type into search engines.

Each of those questions is a potential blog post title. If you are trying to build organic content around your product but do not know what to write, Answer the Public ends that problem instantly.

How directories multiply your free SEO efforts

Free tools tell you what to do. Directories give you the backlinks to make it work. The authoritative backlinks that push your domain rating up are not things you can create yourself — they have to come from other sites linking to you.

Submitting to startup directories is the highest-leverage free backlink activity available to an early product. A listing on Launchstag gives you a permanent, indexed page with a dofollow backlink — no subscription required. Do the same across twenty to thirty directories in your first month and you have a backlink foundation that compounds over time.

Tools like LaunchBuff add further link equity when you compete in their bracket. Each directory submission is thirty minutes of work that keeps producing value for years.

The free stack in practice

Here is the weekly routine: Search Console on Monday to check for new keyword opportunities and CTR drops. Screaming Frog quarterly for technical issues. Answer the Public when you need a blog post idea. Keyword Planner when you are targeting a new page. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools once a month to track new backlinks.

That is less than two hours a week total. For a bootstrapped founder, that is a very good return on what costs nothing.
