What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and How Startups Benefit

SEO gets you into Google's ten blue links. GEO gets you into the AI answer that replaces those links. Here is how startups can start optimising for it today.

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is the practice of structuring your content, entity presence, and web footprint so that AI-powered search tools — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Claude, Bing Copilot — are more likely to mention and recommend your product in their answers.

It is new enough that most founders have not heard of it. It is consequential enough that ignoring it now is the equivalent of ignoring SEO in 2005.

Why GEO is different from traditional SEO

Traditional SEO optimises for a ranked list of ten links. GEO optimises for placement inside a paragraph that may not contain any links at all. The user asked a question; the AI gave an answer with your product mentioned by name. That is the outcome you are optimising for.

The signals that drive GEO are not entirely different from SEO — authority, relevance, entity recognition, citation breadth — but the weighting differs significantly.

  • Entity salience matters more than keyword density. AI systems are entity-aware. The clearer your product is defined as a distinct entity across multiple trusted sources, the more reliably it surfaces in relevant answers.
  • Cited sources determine your reach. Perplexity shows sources. ChatGPT's browsing mode shows URLs. Being on the sites that AI tools trust as references gets you into answers more reliably than having a good homepage.
  • Natural language description beats keyword stuffing. AI models are trained on natural language. Content written like a person explaining something clearly outperforms content written to hit a keyword density target.

The four GEO foundations for startups

1. Entity consistency across the web

Your product name, description, category, and URL should be identical across every platform where you appear: your homepage, directory listings, press mentions, review sites, and social profiles. Inconsistency confuses entity recognition systems. When every source says the same thing about your product, AI systems can confidently surface it for relevant queries.

2. Structured data on your own site

JSON-LD schema markup on your homepage and product pages gives AI crawlers a machine-readable description of what your product is. Use SoftwareApplication schema at minimum: include your product name, category, description, pricing type, and operating platform. This takes an hour and most indie founders never do it.

3. Presence on citation-heavy platforms

Perplexity disproportionately cites certain types of sources: comparison sites, directory listings, editorial reviews, and expert-authored blog content. G2, Capterra, Product Hunt, and curated directories like Launchstag all appear regularly in AI-generated answers about tool categories. Being indexed on those platforms is GEO infrastructure.

4. FAQ and question-targeted content

AI models love answering questions. Content structured around common questions in your niche — "what is the best tool for X," "how do I solve Y," "what does Z mean" — is more likely to be surfaced in conversational AI answers than generic product copy. Write FAQ pages, write explainer articles, write comparison guides. All of it is GEO fuel.

How to measure GEO results

GEO measurement is not yet mature, but you can track it manually. Run the following queries in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews once a month:

  • "What is the best [your category] tool?"
  • "What are alternatives to [your main competitor]?"
  • "How do I [the problem your product solves]?"

Note whether your product is mentioned, what is said about it, and what sources are cited. Over time, you can track your mention rate increasing as your GEO foundations mature.

Also monitor your referral traffic sources in analytics. Traffic from ChatGPT shows as direct or as chatgpt.com referral depending on the browsing mode. Perplexity shows as perplexity.ai. Set up a segment to track these specifically.

The early mover advantage

GEO is in a phase where early optimisation compounds disproportionately. AI models are trained on historical web data — entity associations formed now get baked into model weights. The products that establish clear entity presence in 2026 will have a structural advantage in AI-generated discovery channels for the next several years.

The entry cost is low: consistent descriptions, structured data, and directory submissions. Launchstag is a free starting point — a permanent, crawlable listing that contributes to entity breadth with zero ongoing cost. Add your product today before AI discovery becomes crowded.
