How to Build Domain Authority for a New Website From Zero

Domain authority is not a Google metric, but it correlates with what Google actually cares about. Here's how to build it from zero.

Every founder eventually types their domain into Ahrefs or Moz, sees a Domain Rating of 0 or 1, and panics. Then they read that they need DR 40+ to rank for anything competitive and the panic gets worse.

Here is the actual mechanics of how DR builds, how long it takes, and what to do in your first 90 days.

What DR actually is

Domain Rating (Ahrefs) and Domain Authority (Moz) are third-party scores from 0 to 100 that estimate how strong your backlink profile is compared to other domains in their index. Google does not use either metric directly. But they correlate strongly with Google's own measure of link authority, because both companies are trying to approximate the same thing.

The score is logarithmic. Getting from DR 0 to DR 20 is much easier than getting from DR 40 to DR 60. Do not compare yourself to established competitors. Compare yourself to where you were a month ago.

How links actually pass authority

Not all backlinks are equal. Three things determine how much authority a link passes.

  1. The DR of the linking domain. A link from a DR 80 site is worth roughly 10 links from a DR 20 site.
  2. Whether the link is dofollow. Nofollow links pass minimal authority. Dofollow links pass most of it.
  3. The number of other outbound links on the same page. A page with 500 outbound links passes very little authority per link. A page with 5 outbound links passes a lot per link.

This is why one editorial link from a real blog can be worth more than 100 spammy directory links.

The foundation layer: directories

New sites need volume before quality. You need Google to see that you exist and are being referenced. Directories are the fastest way to build this baseline.

Prioritise directories that give permanent indexed listings and dofollow links. Skip anything that looks like a link farm.

  • Launchstag — weekly indie product hunt, permanent listings, dofollow badge.
  • tools.cafe — curated tool directory, badge-for-backlink, cozy indie audience.
  • LaunchBuff — fortnightly bracket competition, 16 products, 4 rounds, 14 days, permanent listing with dofollow.

Add 20 to 40 category-relevant niche directories over your first two months. Do not submit to everything. Look at the DR of each directory. If it is below 20 and looks abandoned, skip it. If it has an active editorial team and real traffic, submit.

The growth layer: guest posts and HARO

Once you have a directory baseline (typically DR 5 to 15 depending on category), move to earning editorial links.

HARO responses land you links on real news sites, often DR 60 to 80. Sign up. Respond to two queries a day with quotable, specific answers. Expect one publication per 20 to 30 responses. That is fine. Two HARO placements in a good month is a huge win.

Guest posts on niche category blogs pass strong authority when done right. Pitch a specific angle backed by data. Do not use templates. Two guest posts per month on DR 40+ category blogs is enough.

The compound layer: tools, embeds, and mentions

The best links are the ones you did not have to ask for. Two ways to earn these systematically.

Free tools. Build a small, useful, standalone tool related to your main product and put it on your subdomain. A pricing calculator. A generator. A validator. Something people will link to naturally when they write about your category.

Embed widgets. Give users a badge, chart, or embed they can put on their own site that links back to you. This is the model Launchstag and tools.cafe both use for their badge programs. It is powerful because every user who embeds becomes a permanent backlink.

What to skip

Skip link exchanges. Skip PBNs. Skip Fiverr link packages. Skip "comment on 500 blogs" tactics. Skip anyone who promises rapid DR growth. Rapid DR growth from questionable sources triggers Google's link spam algorithms and can nuke your rankings for months.

Realistic 90-day plan

MonthFocusExpected DR
1Launchstag, tools.cafe, LaunchBuff, 15 niche directories3 to 8
220 more directories, HARO daily, first guest post pitches8 to 15
32 guest post placements, 2 HARO placements, launch free tool15 to 25

By month 6, if you keep this pace, you will be in the DR 25 to 35 range. By month 12, DR 35 to 45 is realistic. That is enough to rank for medium-competition keywords in most SaaS categories.
