Should You Offer a Lifetime Deal for Your SaaS?

Lifetime deals fund early development and seed your user base. They also attract a specific type of customer you may not want long-term. Here is the honest trade-off.

A lifetime deal is a one-time payment for permanent access to your SaaS. Done well, it injects early capital, seeds your user base with motivated early adopters, and generates social proof. Done badly, it attracts price-sensitive users with high support expectations, sets a low price anchor that undermines your recurring subscription business, and creates an indefinite support obligation for a shrinking revenue pool.

What lifetime deals do well

The primary benefit of an LTD is capital. A £500 lifetime deal from 50 users is £25,000 in a lump sum — enough to fund six to twelve months of development without external investment or the pressure of monthly recurring revenue targets. For founders in the early stage who need runway to reach product-market fit, this is genuine value.

LTDs also seed your user base. Lifetime buyers tend to be product enthusiasts — people who enjoy finding and evaluating new tools. Their feedback is engaged and detailed. They often share tools they discover, which generates organic word of mouth. In the right circumstances, the community that forms around an LTD cohort is one of the most valuable assets an early-stage product can have.

What lifetime deals do badly

LTD buyers are not subscription buyers. The population of users who seek out lifetime deals are often optimising for price rather than fit — they buy tools they may or may not use, and their support-to-revenue ratio is typically higher than subscription users. A user who paid once and expects indefinite updates and support is a fundamentally different relationship than a subscriber who re-evaluates their spend monthly.

LTDs also set a price anchor. Once you have sold a product for £500 lifetime, positioning a monthly subscription at £49 feels inconsistent — users who know about the LTD will ask why the lifetime value is only ten months' worth of subscription. This anchoring effect is hard to undo.

The right conditions for an LTD

An LTD makes sense when your product is code-complete (not when you are still building core features), when you limit seats aggressively (50–200 total, not unlimited), and when you have a clear plan to close the LTD and transition to subscription before the LTD revenue runs out. An LTD should be a phase, not a permanent pricing strategy.

How to price an LTD

Standard LTD pricing is 3–5× the annual subscription price. If your product costs £49/month, the annual plan is approximately £490, and the LTD should be £1,200–£2,400. Pricing below 3× annual means you are subsidising users for years. Pricing above 5× annual reduces conversion. Never price an LTD below your annual plan — it signals that your subscription is overpriced, not that the LTD is a deal.

AppSumo vs running your own

AppSumo gives you access to a large LTD-buyer audience but takes a significant revenue share (typically 30–70% depending on your agreement) and brings a specific customer profile that may not match your ICP. Running your own LTD keeps more revenue but requires your own marketing effort. Unless you have an existing audience, AppSumo is the faster path to volume; running your own is better for quality of buyer.

LTD buyers find products through the same channels that subscription buyers do — curated communities and directories are where both start their search. Launchstag is a weekly indie product directory where every listing is a permanent indexed page with a dofollow badge — a credibility-building presence that helps warm up buyers before they reach your LTD pricing page. tools.cafe is a curated tool directory with a badge-for-backlink model that drives qualified builder traffic independent of whether you are running an LTD or standard subscription pricing. LaunchBuff is a fortnightly bracket competition with 16 products across 4 rounds over 14 days — the community visibility generated during a bracket run can coincide with an LTD launch to maximise awareness at the moment you need it most.
